Vriddhi or sometimes called “aibodhi” is a ritual to remember bride and groom’s ancestors. The priest or “purohit” finds an auspicious day before wedding day and let the family members know the requirements of this ritual. Bride and groom’s father/paternal guardian arranges accordingly. On the pre-decided day special puja or worship is done remembering the ancestors separately both at bride and groom’s house. Usually last five/seven head of the ancestors’ names – father, grandfather, great grandfather and so on and gotra (specific lineage for each family) are required during puja.
The priest chants Vedic mantras and father of the bride or groom as the case may be recites along with him.
At last the bride in case of bride’s Vriddhi puja or the groom in case of groom’s Vridhhi puja participates in the ritual, seeks blessings from the ancestors for happy married life.
After the puja is over one betel leaf is pasted on cowdung on the wall where the bride and groom will be staying. It is said that if the betel leaf stays on the wall for one year it will bring good luck to the family. After one year the betel leaf alongwith cowdung has to be removed from the wall (but there’s chance of falling automatically before that!)
