Boxanagar – a small suburban area is located approx. 35kms. from the capital – Agartala. The trip to Boxanagar was arranged suddenly just like many other trips. I, being a passionate traveller, cannot just keep myself inside a cage. I want to see the beautiful world. Tripura is an offbeat destination which holds innumerable treasures yet to be explored by most of the travellers.

It was a hot sunny day. Manab and I went to Boxanagar by two wheeler from Agartala. We purchased water bottle and some food Boxanagar Bazar . Buddhist Stupa is not very far from the bazar. History used to be my favorite subject back in schooldays. It still excites me. After reaching the Stupa I was mesmerized by the beauty of the complex. It is very well maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. The details about this place can be found at ASI website.

The complex has a Stupa, Chaityagriha, a monastry and other associated structures. Most of the structures are damaged. Some structures have stood strong against all odds. According to ASI this complex belongs to 7th to 12th century AD.

The excavation started in 2001-02. Local people call this place “RAJBARI”. Though the Tripuri kings were influenced by “Sanatan dharma” the Buddhist relics at Boxanagar imply the connection between this place and nearby regions of present Bangladesh.

Burnt bricks were used to build this complex. The size of one brick is approx. 31x25x6 cm. I loved the brick stairs.
When we went there we found few tourists. Mostly local children were running here and there. This place is a great tourist spot having lots of potential and needs only focus by the Department of Tourism.

As it is a short trip from Agartala it would be better if you bring your own snacks although there are few shops to buy from.

It is a less known yet a majestic tourist spot. So do not forget to click pictures as much as you want.
