The name Amritsar is comprised of two words “Amrit” means “eternal nectar” and “Sarovar” means “lake”. This city has been on my list for a very long time. Amritsar is culturally deep-rooted yet a very modern place. Here not only people belonging to Sikhism but people from across the globe visit the most famous Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple.
Visit to Jalianwalabagh, Partition Museum and Wagah Border can be done in one day. Durgiana Temple, Ram Bagh Palace and Gobindgarh Fort on next day. Gobindgarh Fort visit requires approx. 2.30hours. Golden Temple can be visited in the morning and at night as it remains open all the time.
In this blog you will get a brief summary of what you can do in Amritsar in three days!
Visit iconic landmark – Golden Temple and experience Langar food
When you visit Amritsar this is the must-must visit place. I was amazed to see how devotees keep the temple neat and clean. Volunteers proudly serve the visitors. Langar food is available round the clock no matter what time you reach there. People visiting this place never go hungry. This awesome system of serving people is worth watching and even you can be a volunteer here! I visited first time at night. Next we visited everyday and night after completion of other places visit and had langar food. Golden temple is spread on large area. You can divide your visit to this place into sections instead of spending full day here as you’ll be coming again for langar food anyway 🙂

Visit historical places – Gobindgarh Fort, Partition Museum, Jalianwala Bagh, Ram Bagh Palace
Gobindgarh Fort is related with Punjab Kesari Maharaja Ranjit Singh who bravely fought with the British to save his land. A visit to this historical fort will let you know more about history of Amritsar. Don’t miss the 7D show!

Partition Museum is located near to Golden Temple and you should not miss it. There are collections of materials of people who migrated from partitioned Punjab after creation of Pakistan during independence in 1947. Keep in mind on Monday the Museum is closed (Opening time Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm).
Another nearby and must-not miss tourist attraction is Jallianwala Bagh Museum. During my visit in February 2021 it was closed due to maintenance work. How can you miss Wagah Border Parade or Beating the Retreat if you are in Amritsar? All you need to take is get into a bus and then a rickshaw and you will be at Wagah-Attari border. And sadly this too was not done during my visit in Feb’2021 due to Covid outbreak but as per latest news this will start very soon with limited public gathering.
Ram Bagh Palace is located nearby Golden Temple still we booked cab as our feet needed some rest. It was once the summer palace of Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh named after Sikh Guru Ram Das ji. During Feb’21 this palace was under renovation so we could not go inside. Stroll around the palace will refresh you as there are multiple old trees and birds chirp. My son loved chasing pigeons 🙂
Visit Mata Durgiana Temple – Twin sister of Golden Temple
Durgiana Temple looks very similar to the Golden Temple. The doors are built of silver. Radha-Krishna temple is there. Lord Ram-Sita and Hanuman are worshipped too in this temple. Langar Bhavan is there. Take local rickshaw to visit this temple and you will have experience of gully-roads of Amritsar. It costs approx. Rs.200/- There are some other temples nearby like Hanuman Temple.
Experience Amritsari culture through roaming the streets of Amritsar
As said earlier Amritsar is culturally rich. While walking through the streets of Amritsar you’ll come across statues of brave fighters of Amritsar like Maharaja Ranjit Singh. You can buy souvenirs from the shops like phulkari dupattas, Punjabi Jutti, kara (iron bracelet) and Papad. Though dagger is very much essential part of Sikhs, sometime carrying this as souvenir may get you into trouble.
Taste Authentic Amritsari Food at Dhaba – don’t miss mouthwatering street food
How can your Amritsar trip even be completed without tasting food at authentic Punjabi Dhaba? Dhaba is a roadside food stall but now-a-days you can taste Dhaba food in a nice restaurant style place also. Taste Amritsari food to better know Amritsari culture.
Three days are not enough to know culture-traditions and visit all the destinations of Amritsar but atleast you can get to know bits of everything of “Amazing Amritsar”!
