“Boubhat” is the ritual of cooking food at in-law’s house for the first time by newly wed bride. This happens next day after bride’s arrival. In some families “bashi biye” takes place at groom’s house. In that case after completion of “bashi biye” rituals for “boubhat” take place.

The rituals for boubhat start with Bhat-Kapor. Bhat means cooked rice and Kapor means cloth. Groom gives saree, alta (lac dye), sindur and a plate of cooked food to the bride and promises to take care of her for the rest of her life.

The bride takes blessings from her life partner 🙂

Then starts Boubhat. The ritual is about cooking and serving first food at in-law’s house. But technically the food is cooked by others. Sometimes the bride takes part in cooking for a brief time. After all the items are cooked bride serves food to the groom’s relatives.

In some families bride sits with younger sister in-laws and brother in-laws and have the first elaborate meal in her honor.
